The ECPMF’s NEWSOCRACY event is devoted to discuss media ownership as a topic affecting many European countries, enabling us to assess if and to what extent conflicts of interest may undermine the independence of the information we consume. The NEWSOCRACY event in Prague focuses on new forms of media owners as well as on implications of media ownership concentration on local/regional journalism. Through hands-on knowledge exchange we aim to come up with constructive approaches to promote media plurality.

Press and media freedom is under attack in Europe, and it’s getting worse. The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) was founded by 25 organisations from 16 countries as an independent European Co-operative Society (SCE) to counter this development. Our work is based on the European Charter on Freedom of the Press. The ECPMF and its partners preserve and defend media freedom with several activities: we monitor the state of free media in Europe and provide news and tools on media freedom issues. We raise awareness of media freedom violations and bring together stakeholders from different spheres. We initiate joint fact-finding missions, conferences and events and provide practical support to journalists at risk – for example through a Journalists-in-Residence programme, legal support and advocacy.  Not least, we lobby for the protection of journalists and media freedom standards on a pan-European level.
