The ECPMF’s NEWSOCRACY event is devoted to discuss media ownership as a topic affecting many European countries, enabling us to assess if and to what extent conflicts of interest may undermine the independence of the information we consume. The NEWSOCRACY event in Prague focuses on new forms of media owners as well as on implications of media ownership concentration on local/regional journalism. Through hands-on knowledge exchange we aim to come up with constructive approaches to promote media plurality.

Václav Štětka is Lecturer in Communication and Media Studies at the Department of Social Sciences, Loughborough University, since 2016. He worked as Research Fellow at University of Oxford between 2009-2013, and then as Head of the Political Communication Research Group (PolCoRe) at Charles University in Prague. In his research he focuses on the impact of the Internet and social media on political communication and journalism, particularly with regards to issues of disinformation and trust to news media. Apart from that he also analyzes contemporary transformations of media systems in Central and Eastern Europe, especially the changing ownership structures and their impact on media freedom and autonomy. He is Vice-Chair of Political Communication Section of ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association) and participates on several international research projects and networks, such as the Digital News Report (University of Oxford) or Media Pluralism Monitor (European University Institute).
