The ECPMF’s NEWSOCRACY event is devoted to discuss media ownership as a topic affecting many European countries, enabling us to assess if and to what extent conflicts of interest may undermine the independence of the information we consume. The NEWSOCRACY event in Prague focuses on new forms of media owners as well as on implications of media ownership concentration on local/regional journalism. Through hands-on knowledge exchange we aim to come up with constructive approaches to promote media plurality.

Session I: A new class of media owners? Panel discussion
We see a new era of media ownership that is characterised by the extinction of the old school publisher, who was told to treat journalism and journalistic reputation as a precious good that earned him a lot of influence and money. Also due to the enormous economic pressure (created by digitalisation and partly by political elites to influence the market) we register a change in media ownership and find new types. What was formerly the exception is now the rule : media owners with special interests. The panel discussion aims to address how local elites, oligarchs, foreign/cross-border owners, mix companies, governmental stakeholders, ... may influence the media markets - including challenges and opportunities in Europe.
